History of San José Mineta International Airport (SJC)
In 1939, Ernie Renzel — a local grocer and future mayor — led efforts to acquire 483 acres of Stockton Ranch from the Crocker family. This land was designated for San José’s future airport.
In 1945, pilot James M. Nissen and two partners leased 16 acres, where they built a runway, hangar, and office for a flight school. Soon after, the City of San José decided to develop a municipal airport. Nissen sold his business and became the first airport manager.
The first airline flights began around 1948 with Southwest Airways operating DC-3s on a multi-stop route between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
On February 1, 1949, San Jose Municipal Airport was officially opened for commercial service.
Over the decades, the airport saw significant expansions, including new terminals and extended runways.
In 2001, the airport was renamed Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport, honoring a former mayor, U.S. congressman, and Secretary of Transportation.
By 2018, the airport served over 14 million passengers annually, offering nonstop flights to 50+ domestic and international destinations across three continents.
