San Diego Airport: Overview, Services & Travel Info

San Diego International Airport (SAN)

Address: 3225 N Harbor Dr, San Diego, CA 92101
Originally called San Diego Municipal Airport – Lindbergh Field, it was dedicated on August 16, 1928, built near San Diego Bay.

The name “Lindbergh Field” came from Charles A. Lindbergh—after his historic solo nonstop Atlantic flight in 1927, he promoted the creation of the airport and allowed his name to be used.

By 1930, the San Diego–Los Angeles airmail route was launched, increasing the airport’s importance.

In 2003, the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority took over operations and officially adopted the name San Diego International Airport (SAN), retiring “Lindbergh Field” in formal usage.

In 2013, Terminal 2 became the first LEED Platinum-certified airport terminal in the world, highlighting SAN’s dedication to sustainability.

Fun Fact: SAN is the busiest single-runway commercial airport in the United States.
